Day 1: San Francisco to Reno

I’m off on a road trip to, and around, Colorado’s National Parks. Day one of my road trip started across the Bay Bridge, passed Sacramento, and through the Tahoe National Forest. I followed Interstate 80 east to Reno.

Maker Faire 2014

Maker Faire came to San Mateo this weekend. Inventors to tinkerers, from young to old, showed off their creations to tens of thousands of attendees. Maker Faire has been going on in the Bay Area since 2006, and is a gathering of tech enthusiasts, crafters, educators, tinkerers, hobbyists, engineers, science clubs, authors, artists, students, and commercial exhibitors.

IRIS Science Cafe: The Spacecraft

On Wednesday night NASA Ames hosted the first IRIS Science Cafe at the NASA Ames Visitor Center. The science cafe program was the first in a series of evening programs NASA Ames is piloting. The first program focused on the IRIS spacecraft and was led by Kimberly, Gary Kushner, and Chris Hoffman.

Andy Chung spoke about the delicate task of finding the next thing that can become huge at the DisruptFilm Summit in Park City, Utah. He is a partner at Khosla Ventures, which has six investing partners and $3 billion under management. They have a $300 million seed fund for high-risk, higher-return experiments and a $18 million main fund for 50% sustainability, 50% in IT and consumer health.
