Flight #25: SLC – JFK

10/06/10 | In the air

After a very nice day in Salt Lake City, I headed back to what I should now call my second home, JFK.

JetBlue flight #92 was piloted by Captain Michael and first officer Robert. We left 20 minutes late due to weather at JFK.

Flight attendants Brandie, Colleen, and Shirley were very quiet and I got to sleep for most of the flight.

Unfortunately, things went bad as we got to the east coast. First, Michael was instructed to fly a holding pattern for 20 minutes. Apparently strong surface winds wouldn’t let planes land. Strong enough no aircraft could handle them.

After 20 minutes, there was still no good news. Running low on fuel, we had to divert to Newark. An hour and a half after we should have landed at JFK, we landed in Newark.

Getting back on my busy itinerary, I headed to Salt Lake City on JetBlue flight 87. This flight made up for me missing my flight to Las…

Flight #23: BOS - JFK

On an unexpected flight on a very confusing day of travel, I made my way to JFK via JetBlue flight #1017. The flight was already delayed and I was able to get a seat on the flight.

My options were to spend a night at Boston or at New York, so I thought it would be a safer bet at JFK if weather delayed me the next day since I had to go through JFK anyways. It was raining in Boston.

Day 21: Concord and Augusta

Starting a rainy and miserable day in Concord, New Hampshire, another state capitol was first on the list.

Day 20: Portland and White Mountain

Maine has a number of lighthouses, two of which I had the opportunity to see. The Portland Head lighthouse at Fort Williams on Cape Elizabeth is apparently the more photographed lighthouse of the bunch. This lighthouse had a fog horn that “talked” to another one at a different tone.

Day 19: Lewiston

Of all the places I’ve visited in my life, Maine was one that I had mixed feelings of. My dad grew up in Lewiston and I remember seeing all the black and white photos. It was something to actually get to the town and see firsthand where everything is.

My first stop was the cemetery where a number of family members are buried. With all the cemeteries I’ve visited this month, I found myself stopped when I saw my last name on the tombstone.

To say I was emotional is an understatement. It was an experience that I will never forget.

Day 18: Washington, Annapolis, Dover

Starting the day early, I headed to the Bureau of Engraving and Printing in Washington DC. Tours are every 15 minutes. Tickets were not required as this is the non-peak time of the year.

Day 17: Washington

Today was wasted trying to reposition and figure out what could be done for the remainder of the day. By the time I got settled, everything was closed and so today became a rest day. I found out a few things at the airport during the 2.5 hours after my flight landed.

There is a travel aid desk that have some very competitive rates for hotels near the airport. Apparently this airport is far enough away from Washington (Regan much closer) that they work a little harder to get travellers to come visit. I got a nice hotel room for cheaper than anything I could find on the internet.

It was extremely hard and frustrating to do anything from IAD. It took over an hour and a half to get a shuttle to a nearby hotel. But once I got to the hotel, there was a king size bed waiting for me.

After dinner, I watched the sunset.

On JetBlue flight #1255, an unexpected detour a day before I should have flown, Captain Joseph and first officer Victor got us to the gate only 20 minutes after we were scheduled to arrive.
