On the ground

Day 6: Plymouth, Provincetown, and Eastham

09/14/10

Sunday was spent visiting the Cape Cod area up to the north at Provincetown. Starting from Boston, head south and take a moment to stop at Plymouth. It has a handful of things to see.

Plymouth Rock was the landing place of the Pilgrims in 1620. It isn’t all that spectacular, but it is worth a visit as it was part of the history of the Pilgrims

Day 5: New York City

09/13/10

On a short stay at JFK on Saturday, I decided to venture into the city to see Ground Zero on the anniversary of the tragic day many people lost their lives.

I wanted to visit the World Trade Center site for my second time to honor and reflect on my journey this month. Flying is a big part of this journey, and every time I go through security and get on a plane, I think about the day I watched a terrible thing happen. It is in the minds of all of us who watched or experienced it.

Day 4: Richmond

09/12/10

As part of the All You Can Jet pass, I stopped off in Richmond, Virginia, an awesome place to spend a day at. It is a little over an hour and a half flight from JFK on JetBlue.

My first stop in Richmond was the state capitol, the second on this trip. The capitol is beautiful from the outside. Inside they have a section Working Our Her Destiny about a few women in Virginia’s history.

You can see the House and Senate chambers. They are in recess until January.

Day 3: Burbank

09/10/10

A quick visit to Burbank for the Tonight Show with Jay Leno was a fantastic experience. I didn’t realize how much of Burbank is filled with television production companies. Every block seems to be one. NBC, ABC, Warner Bros. to name just a few.

I exchanged my reservation for a ticket to the show around 1pm. I was 22nd in the line. While waiting in the line, I met a number of non-AYCJ people traveling from different places. One couple was on a road trip heading home to Austin.

Day 2: Portland

09/09/10

The first state capitol on this trip was the Oregon State Capitol in Salem. It was very quiet as the House and Senate are not in session. They still offered a tour up 121 steps to the observation level. Beware, you will get winded as there is no elevator from the 4th floor. It was clear enough to see most of the city thanks to the weather!

Day 1: Long Beach

09/08/10

Long Beach Airport is rather small. I’ve flown into a few small airports in the United States, but for some reason I thought that this being a (mini-)hub for JetBlue, there would be more planes than just a few gates. I now understand why there was no kickoff party held here. The runway is the only large place in the airport that could hold a group of us.
